Layers

2024

The emergence of the optical lens marks one of the major technical upheavals in the history of representation. From the Camera Obscura to the Camera Lucida, projection enabled the tracing of lines and forms — still latent, unfixed on any surface.

Layers is an installation composed of multiple strata. Starting with a blank 35mm slide onto which a face is painted using pigments and solvents, the image is then projected onto a flat surface. An inkjet print mounted on this surface overlaps with the projection, creating a subtle vibration between the printed lines and those cast by the carousel.

Air currents within the space gently move the print, adding another layer of vibration — between projection, ink, and color highlights.

An image is thus affixed to the wall, while its luminous double is projected on top of it. What happens when we step between the projector and the wall? Which image remains visible — and which one disappears?

This work is an exploration of layering as a means to compose a whole — like an anatomical cross-section, where each layer reveals a different part of the structure.
